Thursday, June 10, 2010 The Great Salt Lake

Two things are de rigueur in Utah - the Tabernacle and the Great Salt Lake. I only have one day allotted to Utah so I had to choose. Hope you weren't expecting photos of the Tabernacle. This massive saline inland lake is an awesome freak of nature. As it turns out, thousands upon thousands of California gulls also find it awesome and come here to nest each Spring, hence the photo of birds riding the waves. Took a short hike (yeah, that toe is still a mess) on Ladyfinger Trail that traverses a rocky spit (first pic) intruding into the lake to get a better view of Egg Island, a small island in the lake that serves as a gull rookery. Found quite a variety of lizards, snakes, and flowering plants on this narrow stretch. I'm a fool for the lizards so I chased one til it was tired enough to be still for a photo, presented above. Enjoy. There's a spiffy causeway to the visitor center on Antelope Island. The story of human interaction with the lake is fascinating and well presented at the Center which houses an amazing collection of Native American artifacts from nearby Fremont Island. The lake is currently receding so it's quite a schlep from the Antelope Island facilities down to the lake itself. Last photo is me at the edge of the amazingly clear water. If you're in Utah and short on time, don't even consider the Tabernacle. Just get to the lake. Last note on Utah. There's a serious shortage of liquor stores.
