Monday, June 7, 2010 Palo Duro Canyon

Wasn't gonna post til I reached Canada, but so many postworthy sights along the way. Pics are from a day spent in Palo Duro Canyon State Park near Amarillo, Texas where geologic eras and time itself are represented by boldly colored strata in the canyon walls. 102 degrees F but put on my big girl britches and hiked the short CCC trail to get my "legs". The Civilian Conservation Corps built the original structures in the park and cleared this little gem of a trail that offers loads of spectacular viewing opportunities in a short, easily navigated trail. Then lit out for the Lighthouse, the Park's signature rock formation (first pic above). Great trail ~3.5 miles RT, I think, with only a short challenging climb at the end. Lots of biking opportunities in this Park also. If you're in the Panhandle, don't miss this gem.
