Saturday, June 12, 2010 Washington

Spent Friday night in Prosser, Washington in the Yakima Valley which is likely where the Garden of Eden was actually located. Winery and orchard country. Apples, pears, cherries (looked about ready to harvest) - the sorts of orchards you don't see in the south. I could live in this. Pressed on toward Seattle, my ultimate destination for the day, and found the uplands above the Yakima Valley (third pic) to be xeric and a weird contrast to the verdant valley. Then the mountains. Kinda scary hugging the curves, trying to hold it on the road while gawking the scenery. Seattle and the water open up in front of me in a technicolor explosion. Not a cloud in the sky - unusual around here. My husband was a professional water-skier (read that gypsy) in his youth and skiied at the Seattle World's Fair, the location of which is now occupied by Seattle Center and still anchored by the Space Needle which was constructed for the Fair. The Needle has become Seattle's symbol, and on a clear day a trip to the observation deck allows a view of all Seattle, the sound, Mt. Rainier, and Mt. Baker. The day was gloriously clear. Pics of all included. Tomorrow I cross into Canada. Vancouver here I come!!
